BAPE x Birkenstock. This whole collabo thing has officially gone too far
Birkenstock must be STOKED! I haven’t seen anyone rockin the Birks since highschool. Deadheads are all but extinct and with them went Birkenstock’s sales. I really don’t know who buys BAPE stuff, either. I guess it’s the Japanese, I mean someone is keeping them financially solvent. But together they’re a fashion force to be reckoned with.
Courtesy of freshnessmag, here is the latest collabo to grace our streetwear loving hearts:
4 different shades of camo will surely let you turn these hippie wardrobe staples into the item that ties together any streetwear outfit.
It’s amazing, really. What’s next? I’m just waiting for that Alife x Speedo.
I guess I’ll file this one under sneakers?

Starks Laces - customize our kicks without a sharpie
I just learned about Starks Laces and they’ve got a good idea going.
With the homogenization and mass-availability of streetwear and kicks, it’s hard to look original anymore. Well here is one more accessory you can add to your ‘drobe to kick it up a notch. Starks Laces, available in a slew of styles. Here’s a few:
quake blue for HUF:
tiger stripe camo:
classic tennis:

They’ve got a few collaboration laces with HUF and a bunch of other designs. Before this, custom laces were pretty much limited to pink skulls, Care Bears and checkers from Hot Topic. Starks is definitely a welcome addition.
Of course, like any flossy new accessory, kids are gonna go crazy with the Starks. Matching them, or mismatching them with their fitted caps and purple and green tee shirts. Done in moderation though, I think these laces could be hot. Especially when someone else is rockin your same shoes.
My favorite is the pair with the Tribe Called Quest “Low End Theory”, red and green stripes. You can see those here.

Chinese made fake Jordan IVs
A couple years ago I was dying for a pair of Jordan IVs. But as we all know, anywhere they were available they sold for $350-$400. My wife however was not aware of this and so when she found a pair on eBay for $90, she ordered them for me 2 years ago for Christmas. Direct from China.
Aren’t they beautiful? Works of art, huh? They’re perfectly balanced. They’ve got the perfect blend of retro and future style. They’ve got just the right amount of bulk that your jeans hang right on them, but you can also wear them with shorts. And they looked REAL, man! Even the box and the plastic hang tag and the little Jordan postcard… the whole thing. It looked so legit, I thought maybe they were really real.
The problem (besides the fact that they’re fake) is that they are a 9 and I wear a 9.5 (my wife was hella bummed when she learned that she got me the wrong size and even more bummed when I had to tell her they were fake). These fake Jordan IVs were sitting in my closet for TWO YEARS! I could never figure out if I should sell them, throw them away, give them away or what. Finally, last week I broke them out and tried them on again. They were definitely a little small, but not so bad. And even though they’re fake… damn, they look fresh! Alright, I decided, I’ll wear ‘em.
After just ONE DAY this is what happened to them:
One day! Literally falling apart at the seams. And it wasn’t a rough day either, just a couple hours walking around The ‘Dena. Any questions I had on whether these Jordan IVs are real or fake were answered right then and there. FAKE!
So the moral of the story is: don’t buy Jordan IVs for $90 on eBay from China. Spend at least $350. That way even if they fall apart, you can tell yourself they’re real… I mean they cost $350, right?

Original Fake and Bapesta X Spongebob Squarepants. Come on, man.
As many of you may have already peeped on some other streetwear blogs, Original Fake is doing a series of gear based on Spongebob Squarepants. What the hell is up with that?! I mean, seriously! I don’t really like to write blogs that just diss, but this is too much.
Do you know anyone who would wear this: (pic from Highsnobiety)
?
I mean, yeah… it’s got kind of a cool Kaws spin on it, but it’s still Spongebob. You know, the same Spongebob that’s on all the boys’ underwear and pajamas from KMart?
Obviously, the homie Bob is down with some big timers in the fashion world because he also got a signature sneaker form Bape. Check the Bapesta Spongebobs: (pic from Highsnobiety)
Who are they fooling with this stuff? I’m the first to admit that my opinions on fashion can be swayed when new trends emerge or companies I like do something that I thought I didn’t like. I mean I never thought I’d be wearing tight jeans. But these designs are obnoxious. they totally lack any aesthetic value. They remind me of the Alife Sesame Street tees I wrote about a while back that, by the way, I haven’t seen even one person wearing.
On the real those shirts scare me little. Imagine having lunch or a conversation with someone wearing one of these, their manboobs staring you down.
Till next time.
Holla!

To all a fashionable Christmas, and to all a goodnight.
Merry Christmas everyone.
The season of giving and receiving has wound down and with just 1 hour and 41 minutes left until December 26th, my wallet is empty and my stomach is full. It’s back to the grind tomorrow and my little 4 day slice of heaven is coming to a close. I shopped, saw The Golden Compass at The Grove, ate espresso-chocolate-chips pancakes from The Griddle, hung with the fam and got not-enough sleep. It was good times.
Next weekend will double as a UFC fight night and a second mini-Christmas party for the homies who didn’t get their gifts today. And I’ll for sure have something written about George St. Pierre’s slaughter of Matt Hughes and Wanderlei’s utter annihilation of Chuck Liddell at UFC 79… but that’s another blog.
Statistically speaking, it was a good holiday season for the retail industry. People were shopping and thank God I got some of what was bought. If you read my blog you probably know I like my streetwear clean and simple and that I like FUCT, Upper Playground and New Balance (amongst many other things, of course). Looks like wifey was reading my blog because she got me all three.
I got this shirt from Upper Playground:
This one from FUCT:
And the pimpy velcro New Balances from Undefeated which I KNOW I saw on Freshnessmag or Highsnobiety, but for some reason I can’t find the image now.
I got my wife the Made Me tights from Karmaloop:
and also some things I picked up a the Insight sample sale here in LA.
What’d you get?
Merry Christmas everyone. Back to the grind.
Holla!

Nike Air Trainer TWII x SUPREME
Niiiiiiiice. I loved me some Bo Jackson’s when I was younger. I copped a pair of the Trainers when they were re-released about 5 years ago and wore those shoes to death.
With so many fugly colorways going on with shoes these days, it’s nice to see Supreme come out with something clean and nice (with a jacket to match! aawww) with these low-top version of the trainers. According to Highsnobiety they’ll be available only in Supreme stores, in 3 colors on November 8th.

The webbing and the colors are reminiscent of the Jordan IVs, the most beautiful sneaker eva. I give them a B+. Nice kicks.
The jacket is cool, too. I’ve always wanted to rock a letterman-style jacket like that, but I could never pull them off. I think I’m too small for them. I’d look like I was wearing my big brother’s clothes.
Btw… will this ever slow down, the whole sneaker thing? Freshnessmag.com and Highsnobiety have new colorway drops announced DAILY! I mean every DAY it seems Nike and others are dropping new shoes. That’s ridiculous!

New Balance 577 x sneakersnstuff
New Balance have been a cool, clean alternative to Nikes for a while now. It’s mostly the 574 model that you see around. They have a real sort of even, clean (I use that word a lot, “clean.” Don’t I ?) look to them. With some jeans I have to wear hi-tops, but the 574s have just enough bulk in a low top to hold my pants right yet still look proper with shorts or skinny jeans. The other New Balance models don’t seem to have the same aesthetic value as the 574s. The just didn’t seem as… well… balanced. Until now.
New balance teamed up with sneakersnstuff.com, a European online shoe store, to make these super dope 577s.

These color ways are solid if I do say so myself. Especially the green ones. The offsetting of the earth tones with the hot pink is especially nice. And the gray on gray is just (ahem) yeah, you know… clean.
There’s something about these color combos that make the actual design of the show look better in my opinion. I’ve always thought they were a little too long and narrow compared to the 574s, but these shoes are hot. And besides that, New Balance makes a top quality, very comfortable shoe.
Sneakersnstuff.com has a real nice selection of all the other major shoe brands, but I don’t know what shipping would cost as it seems they’re based in EU.

Asics finally enters the sneaker game.
I’ve been wearing Asics for years, for running that is. Their running shoes are top notch, ask any Sport Chalet employee. But they’ve never made a shoe I thought worthy of rocking beyond my 7 am jog. They had the Onitsuka Tiger line, but those were a little too indie rock and too narrow and flat; pants didn’t fall on them right.
Nike learned long ago to make their high-end athletic shoes look cool enough to wear on the street. Jordans and Air Max 95s have been on the courts, the tracks AND the dance floors for decades now. This obviously translates to more people buying the shoes y ma$ dinero. I mean what if only serious golfers wore the Tiger Woods hat? I don’t think Nike could afford to pay TW their share of the $87 million he makes a year. Companies like Asics however basically only sell their high-quality running shoes to people who actually want to RUN in them.
I think Asics is finally taking a cue from the dominant leader in the footwear industry. Enter the Asics Gel Lyte III.

According to Highsnobiety, Asics teamed up with Patta (a sneaker boutique in Amsterdam) and Alife to create these colorways on their kicks. I’m excited for them, a nice break from the Nike domination of the sneaker scene. I think I’ll be coppin’ me a pair. They seem to have a strange no-tongue design that I don’t think I’m feeling, though. I’ll have to see them in person.
Congratulations Asics! Go sell some shoes, goddamit.

Nike Talaria - Air Max 90 hybrid. Dope.
What can I say except when my 2 favorite Nikes of all time get mashed together? OMG, those are dope.

I love sneakers, but it’s actually pretty rare that I see a pair that I just gotta have. The original Talaria trail shoes in black/yellow and the Air Max 90s are 2 of those shoes I just had to have. This mash up is dope. I’m probably a week late on the jump on these, but they’re hot.

New Timberland metallics
You gotta have BALLS to wear these:

I mean for real. I don’t personally now anyone that can get away with this. Maybe it’ just cus I’ve never been a Timberland guy, but these boots are way out there. Maybe Kool Keith could do it. Yeah, I think Kool Keith could do it.
