Streetwear store review #1 - Barracuda
With so many streetwear boutiques popping up all over Los Angeles it’s hard to be cool anymore. I mean it’s no secret where you got that hoodie from anymore. You can get that tee shirt anywhere and they sell your dunks at Urban Outfitters. However, I still love clothes and the stores that sell them. So this will be the first in my series of reviews of streetwear stores in the Los Angeles area. Exciting, huh?
Barracuda… Melrose’s finest vendor of upper-end streetwear. Great tee-shirt selection you don’t see everywhere else, interesting kicks and an eclectic mix of brands make this store a must-see stop when out shopping. (I’m always forgetting to take pictures of the outside of the store)

You walk in to the girls’ section on the bottom floor where brands like Insight, Stussy, Gentle Fawn, and many more grace the racks. They’ve got a nice collection of denim and tees for girls and probably the best selection of tops, sweaters and jackets I’ve ever seen. Every time, I go in there there’s something awesome I want to buy for my wife. Barracuda does a really good job buying clothes that are unique and hip without being too weird and unwearable. They’ve got uber-hip, over-sized, 80s style girls sweatshirts, fitted jackets and more.

Head upstairs to the men’s section and there’s more clothing hotness for yo ass. Barracuda always has a big selection of Stussy tees and caps… always. They’ve also got tees from RVCA, Insight, 2K, and a bunch of other brands I can’t remember. Whether you’re looking for some soft, slim-cut tees, or some standard, stiff streetwear type stuff, Barracuda gotcha covered.

Barracuda also has a kick-ass shoe selection of not only Nikes and Adidas in rare colorways, but higher end Varvatos Converse, and other shoes like that.

Like the women’s section downstairs, the men’s selection of jackets and hoodies is dope. They’ve always got nice numbers from Stussy, FreshJive and others. They recently were carrying a dope black on black camo-ish jacket from Quiksilver, not a brand you see in most boutiques like this.

While I was there they were having some crazy dope sale. Like 50% off AND buy 2 get 1 free on shoes and tees or something like that. I’m not sure if that sale is still going on, but you should definitely check it out.
Lastly, Barracuda has a whole special section dedicated to LA-based line Kazuo. Kazuo is a cut ‘n sew line with simple graphic tees and clean, bohemian-modern shirts, jackets and more. I didn’t like this line too much when I first saw it, I thought it was kind of boring, but after a while it’s definitely grown on me. The pieces are classic with a just a touch of strange.

So that’s Barracuda in a nutshell. Definitely stop by if you never have. While it’s not strictly a streetwear store, I’d say it’s the most unique store of it’s kind in LA and there are always great finds there. The best store on Melrose for sure and arguably the best boutique in LA.

Grey One Pasadena gets a new eatery. Pasadena Whole Foods.
I found out on the LAist today that there’s a new corporate behemoth that has made a home in good old Pasadena, the suburb north east of Los Angeles. Whole Foods… that’s right, Whole Foods has put up a location near Grey One where all you streetwear heads in the East Valley can get your organic on. (Yes, I’m sorry, this blog has nothing to do with streetwear or hip-hop, but I was way too excited to not talk about this. I’m truly sorry to those of you who fell for the old Grey One switcheroo. You suckas.)
This Whole Foods is more than a Whole Foods. It’s more than a health food store. It’s a two story mega-mall of organic gluttony. It’s a restaurant, a spa, a bar, an ice cream shop, a taco stand, a tapas joint, a vitamin/homeopathic pharmacy, a singles pick-up spot and more. Let’s take a look, shall we? (All photos straight jacked without permission from LAist .)
First off, we have the handmade soap section. Where you can get all your freshly scented, all-natural wash on. It looks like a gourmet cheese display, I know. But really it’s just some earth-friendly, hand-crafted body cleansing agents.
Next we’ll look at what is probably my 2nd favorite part of this new Whole Foods, the massage parlor. Now, plenty of other markets have a masseuse set up temporarily with their little massage chair at the front of the store. But who wants to sit in front of all those people walking by and get rubbed down? Whole Foods thought of an answer to this problem. We can all get our rub on in a much more quiet, serene and peaceful atmosphere than next to the front door. For anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes, you can enjoy a relaxing massage at the hands of a professional without hundreds of oogling passers-by watching you and talking about how lame you look getting a massage.
Here we have an extensive selection of fine meats and cheeses. And who doesn’t like fine meats and cheeses? Salty, smoky, cured and aged. I love them.
Another part of this little slice of heaven on earth is the dessert area. Chocolate and ice cream are 2 of my top 4 favorite things to eat ever. WFs must have asked my mom or something, because they delivered exactly what I wanted. Check out the Gelato and Chocolate Bar serving fine truffles, rich gelato and what does that sign say? Chocolate Fountain? Yeah… that says chocolate fountain.
I could go on and on. I’ve been drooling over the hand-tossed pizzas, the sushi, the mexican food, the salad bar, the fresh baked artisan breads, the fresh juice bar!
I mentioned what was my second favorite feature of this new WFs, the massage room. I’ll leave you now with my first: the Wine and Tapas Bar. Aaahhhh… wine and tapas. I love tapas. My wife loves tapas. We love to eat tapas. Little Spanish appetizers served in delicious sauces with cheeses and breads. Fantastic.
Some people and I were discussing the future of Los Angeles and Whole Foods and we decided it would really be best if LA just became one giant WFs with giant aisles that were streets. Some of the streets’ names could be Organic Avenue, Poultry Circle, Whole Grain Highway, Produce Pass, and the employee of the month would be mayor.
Next time, I promise you more relevant news about over-priced and over-hyped t-shirts and such. I just couldn’t help myself.
So next time you’re at Grey One spending money you don’t actually have on some hot new Crooks & Castles or In4mation, go get some grub at the new neighborhood Whole Foods in Pasadena. And all you singles out there don’t forget, WFs is the undisputed best place to pick up girls. And therefore a great place to show off your new CHILDREN shirt.
